So, JCenter is shutting down…
You probably have heard that JFrog, the company behind Bintray and JCenter, is shutting down these (mostly free) services soon. Whether you’re the author or a user of any of the nearly 800,000 libraries that are exclusively available on JCenter, you’re probably wondering what’s going on and how to deal with this.

As a result of JCenter and Bintray shutting down, many library authors who published their libraries to JCenter with entirely made up groupIds now face a very painful migration to Maven Central, having to also pick a new groupId which they can assert they control. Contrary to JCenter, Maven Central requires you to “control” the groupId you publish under. In other words, this means you need to control the corresponding domain, obtained by reversing the groupId. We’ll see this in more detail later in the article.

I’m trying to gain more control over what I publish and where, so you can only find full versions of my posts on my Ghost-hosted blog. I’ll keep cross-posting teasers here on Medium to get visibility, but the full articles are going to only appear over there. All the previous articles from Medium have been migrated over — don’t worry, they’re still available here, and as always, they’re free and ad-free. Bonus: articles look better over there, as I have fewer limitations than I do here on Medium.
